October 2003 - Krista Oravec

Krista Oravec is a young digital American artist. Born in 1971 i Detroit, Michigan, she studied Arts, Communications Theory and Research Methods at the Pennsylvania State University. She is a member of the International Art Collective, Barcelona, Spain and the
Texas Photographic Society, San Antonio, TX.
She is also represented in the catalogue of the Photographer's Forum "Best of Photography Annual 2001" in which she was Color Finalist and "Best of Photography Annual 2000" in which she was  Black and White Finalist.
She has many exhibitions in her curriculum, as well as group shows as solo shows, and she is often featured in the Galeria d'Art Zero in Barcelona.
Krista Oravec on her work:
All my work begins in the camera. I frequently experiment with various darkroom techniques, in order to transcend the sometimes mundane reality of life. I enjoy using split-toning, polaroid film manipulations, and other techniques that seem to breathe new life into my black and white originals.
When we photograph, we do more than simply record reality. It is my intention to make the mundane lovely, to make my audience take note of simple things. Otherwise, we may not notice the beauty in every day existence.

Her Technique:
When she works, Oravec almost exclusively begins with black and white negatives that she processes herself. She carries her camera with her almost everywhere, and she feels attracted by inanimate objects. She also photographs candid portraits of people quite often.

She makes copy slides of black and white prints, and uses them to project onto Polaroid peel apart film in her enlarger. The resulting cyan hue is from printing the black and white slide onto the color Polaroid film and then transferring the Polaroid negative onto watercolor paper. She occasionally havsused silk, which gives a monochromatic result.

Critic:
As well with her black and white tones as with her soft acquarell tones, this talented artist achieves a marvellous effect. She does not, however, conform with the classical photography, as she "re-creates" the images, giving them an intrinsic, spontaneous and authentic value. This re-creation of the daily images gives places to a communication, very subtle but at the ame time intense, with the viewer. The person that opens herself to the language of these images, when contemplating them, will after a few times feel a deeper communication, a harmonious experience.
Who knows how to appreciate beauty, will very much enjoy the works of Krista Oravec in his/her daily surrounding.
