Born near Detroit, Michigan in 1971, Krista Oravec first discovered photography as a junior in a Pennsylvania high school. As a teenager, she carried her camera everywhere, including a job at a restaurant and anywhere else she could manage to travel. In 1994, Krista graduated from Penn State University with a B.A. in Mass Communications Theory and Research Methods. She studied photography as an elective in college. Eventually, she started to work in Photoshop in order to post images to a web site. Originally, she did very little manipulation, preferring to work traditionally. However, once begun, she found the medium to be extremely compelling. Currently, Krista resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Contact the artist at: krista@exuberantphoto.com

Artist's Statement
"Self-portrait: noun. a portrait of himself by an artist." -- - Oxford American Dictionary Guilt is a self-portrait. At the time, I was working on a self-assignment exploring my emotions through the context of the seven deadly sins. The framework fell apart, though, and I was left with only a few individual images that resonated with me. I believe the images that developed from the series were too much about fleeting emotions, and became unrealistic explanations of my "self." I was desperately trying to use these emotions to form a concrete image of myself. However, I am left with a strange series of images that although taken within a 6-month period of time, do not necessarily resemble one another. I usually do not stage portraits of myself, I prefer to work more spontaneously. However, I was unable to think of anything else, only how I felt. The process of photographing and digitally manipulating my images granted me distance and time to reflect. Guilt, of course, is not one of the seven deadly sins, and I am unable to describe which sin I was actually attempting to depict. I kept changing my mind about which sin Guilt actually portrayed (although the original concept was for Wrath). The underlying emotion, however, was very real to me at the time. But that's just the point: the emotion was real at the time. I now look at the image with great difficulty; it doesn't seem to represent who I am any more. Instead, it illustrates a moment, or maybe several moments, at the end of 1999. It is less than a year later, and the image now seems unfamiliar. It is who I was in that moment, which is probably all an artist truly depicts in any self-portrait. As human beings, we are utterly mutable and ultimately fluid.
